A Quest for Competency & Queer Affirming Care

A Quest for Competency: Basic Concepts for Working with Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

LGBTQ+ individuals as a community are consistently underserved, and they struggle to find clinicians
who are competent to work with them. This training is designed to provide basic terms and concepts
to help clinicians feel more equipped with the knowledge to meet that need. Participants will be able to describe the difference between binary and non-binary identities as well as be able to identify at least three different gender identities. It will also provide an opportunity for attendees to learn experientially about nonbinary identities through the medium of psychodrama by identifying at least one area of their life that they can use to empathetically connect with the experience of a non-binary client.

James Pennington is a trauma therapist who operates their own private practice, Dream Again Therapy,
in Omaha, Nebraska. They have presented at a number of local and national conferences on LGBTQ+
issues, working with trauma survivors, and how cultural issues impact the therapeutic process. They
also work as a consultant to help clinicians and agencies provide more affirming care to clients with
      transgender and non-binary identities

      Queer Affirming Care

This portion of the workshop will be an overview of the services provided for LGBTQ+ people in the Omaha area and discussion on how the staff work with patients receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and gender related care, in her experience. Kelly will talk about considerations taken for working with these patients such as language changes, paperwork formatting and the use of informed consent model. Discussion will also include resources the staff have and need for these clients as well as barrier to care.

Kelly Garcia is the Patient Care Coordinator at Affiliated Reproductive Health Clinics (ARHC), a new non-profit LGBTQ+ clinic in the Omaha area. She is actively working to develop and propel the program to serve a community that has been historically underserved. With six plus years of healthcare experience and one year of advocacy focused work, Kelly is committed to the intersections of medical care and trauma informed practices. When she is not pushing for bodily autonomy, she is cuddling her dog or congregating at your local queer space for karaoke.
