Gambling and Gaming Use Disorder: Got Skin in the Game

Utilizing a developmental approach to gaming/gambling addiction, this presentation will explore the risk of co-occurence between these disorders and ignite the question, “Is gaming use disorder becoming a gateway to gambling addiction?” This presentation will also provide effective evidenced based treatment modalities for gaming and gambling disorders. Finally, we will examine correlations between gambling/gaming addiction and intensified sugar consumption.

Janet L. Johnson, MA, LIMHP, CDGC, LADC, LPC, has been working as a counselor for the past 16 years. In 2005, Mrs. Johnson obtained her Master’s of Counseling degree, as well as her Gambling Certification, focusing on mental health, addictions, and gambling disorders. In October 2019, Mrs. Johnson won the Nebraska Counseling Association Counselor of the Year Award. In 2020, Mrs. Johnson and her Associate, Jeremy Eberle, began their private practice, Alternative Avenues, located in Lincoln Nebraska.

Jeremy Eberle, LIMHP, CDGC, LADC of Lincoln Nebraska, is a licensed therapist who has been providing services in the form of individuals, groups, couples, and families since 2010. In 2017, Mr. Eberle was the lead researcher in a study connecting prevalence among Nebraska college students and daily fantasy sports. These findings were presented at the National Gambling Conference in Portland, Oregon in July 2017 as well as at other conferences throughout the country. in 2020, Jeremy and his business partner Janet Johnson successfully established Alternative Avenues in Lincoln Nebraska, a treatment agency
centered on mental health, gaming and gambling addiction.
