An Introduction to Functional Medicine for Mental Health
Dr. Josh Friedman. Psy.D.
This presentation is an introduction to Functional Medicine (focusing on the common biochemical issues) related to mental health symptoms and how Functional Medicine can be helpful when the combination of therapy/medication isn’t enough. This presentation will give participants the ability to identify three weaknesses in our current medication focused psychiatric approach to mental health. Participants will also be able to define Functional Medicine, and become aware of how identifying and addressing the biochemical “root cause” of mental health symptoms can lead to better treatment outcomes. With this information, participants will be able to identify the 5 most common physiological causes of depression (and other mental health symptoms). Finally, participants will be able to identify how deficiencies of specific vitamins and minerals can lead to mental health symptoms.
Dr. Josh Friedman earned his doctorate in Psychology from New York University and did post-doctoral training in Psychoanalysis from the Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology (TRISP) in New York City. After working in the field for a few years, it became clear that something was missing from traditional mental health treatment. Curiosity and a chance meeting led him to discover the world of Nutritional Psychology, which teaches that many psychological issues are caused or made worse by underlying biochemical/ nutritional deficiencies. Along the way he became certified as a yoga teacher, incorporating the emphasis on breathing, meditation and movement into his work, as essential tools for working with depression at the deepest levels. To enhance his effectiveness in helping a patient to heal and grow, he became certified as a Holistic Health Counselor at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York. He had been lead to go deeper into the biochemistry of mental health by studying Functional Diagnostic Nutrition and is currently enrolled in the certificate program at Functional Medicine University. Dr. Friendman’s psychotherapy practice is Integrative Psychotherapy of Omaha. He also has a web-based functional medicine consultation business called Alternative Mental Health Solution that helps people get UNSTUCK by finding and fixing the ROOT cause of their symptoms.
